International Schools in Marbella & Costa del Sol: A Parent’s Guide

Marbella and the surrounding Costa del Sol municipalities offer approximately 15 international schools across four curriculum systems: British (the most common), International Baccalaureate, American, and German. Aloha College (Nueva Andalucía): British National Curriculum, ages 3–18, fees €8,000–12,000/year. The most established international school in Marbella with consistently strong GCSE and A-level results. Located adjacent to the Aloha Golf Course, making it the natural choice for Golf Valley families. School buses cover most of Marbella and Puerto Banús.

Swans International School (Sierra Blanca area): British curriculum, ages 3–18, fees €7,000–11,000/year. Situated on the slopes between the Golden Mile and Sierra Blanca, with a focus on small class sizes and pastoral care. Popular with Golden Mile, Sierra Blanca, and central Marbella families. Strong A-level results with university placements across the UK and Europe.

Laude San Pedro (San Pedro de Alcántara): British and Spanish bilingual curriculum, ages 2–18, fees €6,000–9,000/year. The strongest option for families wanting children to be fully bilingual in English and Spanish. Located in San Pedro, making it convenient for families in San Pedro, Nueva Andalucía, and Estepona. Offers both British GCSEs/A-levels and Spanish Bachillerato.

English International College (East Marbella): British curriculum with IB option, ages 3–18, fees €9,000–15,000/year. The premium option with the widest university placement network. Located in Elviria, east of Marbella centre. Offers both A-levels and IB Diploma. Popular with families in East Marbella and Los Monteros.

Deutsche Schule Málaga (Ojén): German curriculum leading to Abitur, ages 3–18, fees €5,000–8,000/year. Located in Ojén, approximately 25 minutes from Marbella centre and 30–35 minutes from Puerto Banús. This is the only school on the western Costa del Sol offering the German curriculum. Popular with German families in Marbella, Elviria, and Benahavís. The relatively remote location is the main trade-off.

Atlas American School (Estepona): American curriculum, ages 3–18, fees €8,000–12,000/year. The Costa del Sol’s primary American-curriculum school, offering US-standard courses and SAT preparation. Located in Estepona, making it convenient for families in the New Golden Mile and western Costa del Sol. A smaller school with a close-knit community feel.

The most popular schools (Aloha College, Swans, EIC) are oversubscribed for entry at ages 3–5 and at the Year 7 (age 11) transition point. Apply at least 12 months before your planned start date for these schools. Mid-year entry is possible at most schools but subject to availability, popular year groups may have waiting lists of 6–12 months.

The typical admissions process includes: a written application with school reports from the child’s current school, an assessment visit (in person or via video call for overseas applicants), an interview with the child and parents, and a trial day or week for younger children. Schools assess English language proficiency and will offer additional EAL (English as an Additional Language) support for children transitioning from non-English-speaking schools. If the school choice is firm before the property search, buy within the 10-minute radius of that school. If the school choice is flexible, Nueva Andalucía offers the widest access: Aloha College is 5 minutes, Swans is 10 minutes, and Laude San Pedro is 10 minutes. This triple-coverage makes the Golf Valley the safest area for families who might need to switch schools as their children’s needs evolve.

Beyond the headline tuition fees, budget for: registration/enrolment fees (€500–2,000 one-time), uniform and books (€300–600/year), school bus transport (€1,500–3,000/year if used), lunch programme (€1,000–2,000/year), and extracurricular activities (€500–1,500/year). The total annual cost per child at a mid-range school is approximately €10,000–16,000 including all extras.

For a family with two children spanning the full 15 years of schooling (ages 3–18), the total education cost on the Costa del Sol is approximately €300,000–480,000. This is substantially less than equivalent international schools in London (€500,000–750,000), Geneva, or Singapore, and is one of the factors that makes Marbella attractive for internationally mobile families.
